On the 22nd of June 2009, the Dr. Ir. Marc Jacobs Foundation was founded. Its purpose is to advance the development of urban planning and design by widening the international orientation of students attending Dutch academic institutions. The foundation has been established in memory of Dr. Ir. Marc Jacobs.
During a five year period the foundation will give students at Master’s level the opportunity to participate in the annual ISOCARP congresses, which are held around the world. The 46th congress will be held in Nairobi (Kenia), in the autumn of 2010.
For this purpose the foundation will award a grant to at least one student, which will cover the costs of travel, accomodation and conference. Candidates are invited to submit a brief paper based on their graduation project. Academic quality as well as relevance to Dutch or Western European professional practice are important criteria which will be evaluated by an independent jury.
The foundation seeks to achieve its goals by sponsorships. The 2010 sponsors can be found at the bottom of the page.

On the 24th of August 2008 Marc Jacobs passed away at the age of 43. The community of urban planners lost a highly motivated professional and inspiring colleague. Marc put in exceptional effort in the area of urban and regional development. As a candidate for a doctorate he distinguished himself by writing an important and authoritative thesis in which he contributed to the scientific foundation of regional urban planning with a research of multimodal urban structures.
The results of this research found their way into practice. As a practitioner and independent consultant, he worked on many projects from vision to implementation. In addition to his professional work, he was an active member of the international organization ISOCARP, an international association of experienced professional planners. ISOCARP organizes among others a yearly international congress where planners from seventy countries meet. As chairman of the Dutch delegation Marc Jacobs was closely involved in the continuing global development of ISOCARP.
